Word Devotional:Spiritual Index

Index: a device that serves to indicate a value or quantity. ( the pointer on a scale or the gnomon of a sundial).

Oswald Chambers

Yesterday’s devotional asked me to turn up my Spiritual Index…So I had to look up the word index.

Chambers presents me with Matthew 7:9
“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will give him a stone?”
An illustration of prayer.  A good child’s prayer, a child asking for something good. A good child who is aware that they are able to ask for something, because the child has a relationship with the parent.
The question is: Do we ask in prayer according to our childish relationship with God?
Childish meaning as a child, an aware child. Or is childish meaning an immature request of a child who is unaware that they are out of line?
Chambers refers to Matthew 5:45 in answer to this…
Matthew 5:45

that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

So this tells me that God hears me in either condition. Correct me if I am wrong. However, Chambers goes on to say:

“Never say it is not God’s will to give you what you ask, don’t sit down and faint, but find out the reason, turn up the index”

Turn up the spiritual index: that indicator within me that tells me if I am currently in or out of the will of God for my life. It is always God’s will to give me (you) what I ask. However, am I asking for something that is within his will for me?

I have to behave like Christ. If I need money, I must follow the directions within the Word to obtain my desired prosperity. I must be a good steward of my finances, my bills must be paid, my tithe must be paid, I must provide for my family’s needs. If these things are not done, I am not asking as a “good” child for what I want.

When these things are not attained I then question God. Listing for him my reasons that I should have that for which I have asked. Listing my devotions, my good works. However my stewardship still falls short. I refuse to check the index…

I refuse to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal what area I need to correct so that I may attain my desires. My (our) Spiritual Index, Spiritual Indicator is the Holy Spirit.

Release Him now to realize what it is you desire. God will give us the desires of our hearts, when we allow Him access to our hearts. And only then.

Spiritual Index: the indicator of our spiritual relationship to Father God; The Holy Spirit
